What is the nature of God?
It is very important for every child of God to know the answer to this question of “what is the nature of God?” Knowing the nature of God improves our relationship with Him for us to live fulfilled lives and be a blessing to the world. Now what is the nature of God? Four basic points answer this question.
Our heavenly Father is a Spirit as stipulated in John 4:24 (“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship Him in spirit and in truth”). A spirit lacks flesh and bones and is invisible to the naked eyes. We are not saying that anything that is invisible to the naked eyes is a spirit. Micro-organisms such bacteria, viruses, some fungi and protozoa are not visible to the naked eyes but may not be referred to as spirit although these microbes can be influenced by spirits. Being a spirit, God also has personality. God has conscience, self-determination, will, intelligence and feeling. Because man was created in the likeness of God, man also has a spirit. Man relates to God through his spirit.
Secondly, our Father is Light. 1 John 1:5 states “This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all” The kind of light we are talking about here is that which is difficult to really comprehend with the natural mind. Being Light, He is pure and impossible to be defiled. Praise God! How awesome it is for the Bible to declare the child of God as being the light of the world! This is one of the privileges of the child of God.
Thirdly, God is Love. 1 John 4:17 states “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as He is, so are we in this world. He is Love and demonstrates Love that is why He sent Jesus to die for our sins and restore man to a more glorious glory. As children of God, we must also demonstrate love to everybody around us no matter what. This is unconditional love.
The last point to describe the nature of God is that He is a consuming fire. “For our God is a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29). Fire signifies the holiness and absolute righteousness of God and as such He always would want to judge sin. Sending Jesus Christ to die and save mankind from sin is a form of judgment of sin. He loves the sinner but would not condone with sin therefore He has given us His word for us to live fulfilling lives. Now we can answer the question “what is the nature of God” Live the glorious life that we have been called into!
