Is the Holy Spirit a person or an influence?
This question of – is the Holy Spirit a person or an influence?- has been a topical issue for many years. In some quarters, the Holy Spirit is recognized as a force or influence without a personality. This is erroneous because the scriptures provide enough evidence about the personality of the Holy Spirit.
Firstly, the Holy Spirit is the third person in the eternal Godhead (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14).
Secondly, the Bible used personal pronouns such as ‘He’, ‘Himself’ to refer to the Holy Spirit (John 14:15,16,26; 16:7-14; 15:26-27).
Thirdly, the Holy Spirit has a Mind (Romans 8:27; 1 Corinthians 2:10-13); Will (1 Corinthians 12:11) and Emotions (Romans 8:26-27; 15:30; Colossians 1:8). The mind, will and emotions constitute personality of an individual. The Holy Spirit is therefore a person and not just an influence or power.
