The work of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament is seen in the life of our high priest, Jesus Christ. This article will discuss the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer.
1. The Holy Spirit brings about the new birth (John 3:5,6).
2. The Holy Spirit lives in the believer’s spirit (Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:17; 1 John 2:27; Acts 2:4).
3. The Spirit assures the believer of salvation (Romans 8:16).
4. The Spirit gives utterance to the believer when it comes to speaking tongues (Acts 2:4; 10:44-46; 19:6; Mark 16:17; 1 Corinthians 14:2,4, 18).
5. The Holy Spirit speaks to the believer (Acts 8:29; 1 Timothy 4:1; Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29).
6. The Spirit opens the understanding of the believer to appreciate the things of God ( 1 Corinthians 2:12).
7. He teaches and guides the believer into all truth (John 16:13; 1 John 2:27).
8. The Spirit gives life (John 6:63; 2 Corinthians 3:6).
9. The Spirit renews and strengthens the believer’s inner being (Titus 3:5; Ephesians 3:16).
10. The Spirit helps the believer to pray (Jude 20; Romans 8:26-28).
11. The Spirit aids the believer to worship (John 4:23-24; Philippians 3:3; 1 Corinthians 14:15).
12. The Spirit provides leadership to the believer (Romans 8:14).
13. The Spirit helps the believer to overcome carnality (Romans 8:13).
14. The Spirit produces the character of Christ in the believer (Galatians 5:22, 23).
15. The Spirit guides the ministry of the believer and calls believers into special service (Acts 13:2-4; Acts 8:29; 16:6,7)
16. In witnessing, it is the spirit that empowers and also imparts spiritual gifts to the believer (1 Corinthians 12:7-12; Acts 1:8).
17. In the last day, the Spirit will bring about resurrection of the dead (Romans 8:11; 1 Corinthians 15:47-51; 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18).
The work of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament is very important. As believers, the Holy Spirit should be our best friend and we have to always find ways of improving our intimacy with the Holy Spirit.
