Independence and walking the will of God

Independence and walking the will of God:

The right kind of independence is required in order to know and walk in the will of God. Dependence on God requires independence from people (including some Christians) and possessions. One must be independent from lust and abnormal inclination to riches. Remember the rich young ruler! Indeed, we are not saying it is bad to be rich- it is the abnormal inclination to it that matters.

We are not saying that to be independent means being indifferent to others and their needs nor are we saying that one should become irresponsible. It does not mean that one should not have a close and loving relationship with other people. What we mean is that, all our relationships have to be submissive to the relationship we have with Jesus Christ (Luke 14:26).

To conclude the topic on independence and walking the will of God, independence from people is important because sometimes, we may be obeying the direction of God but some people dear to us may think that they can show us the ‘true’ will of God for our lives. A typical example is Peter who was rebuking Jesus for saying that He has to die for mankind (Matthew 16:23). Peter was acting out of love for Jesus. Our love for God must supersede the love we have for our loved ones, otherwise, we will always be faced with this struggle of what to really do when God speaks and the message is not in consonance with what our loved ones are speaking. When we are certain about the will of God for our lives, we must be careful who we tell.
