Future outlook of Agriculture in India
Dr. M.S. Swaminathan is recognized as the father of India’s green revolution. In an interview, he discusses the green revolution process in India and the future outlook of agriculture in India. A few of his points are paraphrased below:
Technology and public policy have to go hand-in-hand. Any technology implemented on a poor farmer’s field makes a greater impact than the rich farmer’s field because more poor farmers are likely to adopt the new technology. Anything you do to a woman in a household benefits the whole household.
Social support systems are always important for society.
“Farming is a life giving profession”
Man-made problems require man-made solutions. Technology itself is not good or bad but how it used makes it good or bad. Genetic Modification is a tool that will help solve many future problems such as negative impact of climate change etc.
Land use policy is important for India.
The younger generation must be helped with new technology in order to attract them into agriculture.
Services sector in rural areas is important. Majority of rural farmers must shift from farming into the services sector.
Though this video is on the future outlook of Agriculture in India, other developing nations can benefit from it.
